Saint Catherine the Great Martyr is commemorated in the Orthodox Christian calendar on November 25.

Frosts usually begin on this day, but you can not complain about the weather: winter will give health to all who are patient.

It used to snow on this day, and children used to go sledding. Today, as on any other day, the Church is against quarreling, slander, gossip, slander, condemnation, envy, greed, revenge and despair.

You must not refuse those who ask for your help. Also, you should not meddle in other people’s affairs, give advice when it is not required.

According to popular beliefs, on this day you should not borrow money and hurry – people who hurry will have bad luck. Go to church and pray to St. Catherine. Catherine is considered the patroness of marriage, brides, pregnant women and helps during childbirth.

Singles also pray for a good husband and wife, a strong marriage, ask for advice on how to resolve family discord, and help in raising children.

In the old days, our ancestors used to light three candles near the icon of the holy martyr on Catherine’s day to protect the family.

Christians still observe the observances of the Christmas Lent.

Saint Catherine was from the city of Alexandria, “the daughter of Consta, who had previously been emperor. She, being eighteen years old, was very beautiful, of tall stature and very wise. For she had learned all the trade of the Hellenistic book and had mastered the wisdom of all the bookmakers, the ancients, Homer, Virgil, Aristotle, Plato and others. But not only the books of the philosophers, but also the books of the doctors she learned them well, of Asclepius, of Hippocrates, Galin and, in short, she learned all the rhetorical and syllogistic craft, so that everyone marveled at her wisdom”. (Lives of the Saints)

During the persecution suffered by the Christians, a great celebration was organized in Alexandria in honor of the Roman gods, the emperor being present in the city.

Saint Catherine went to the temple where the sacrifices were being made and in front of it she was outraged by such a great deception, “with which you were deceived by the devils, by serving as a God corrupt and unfeeling idols. It is truly a great shame to be someone so blind and unfeeling, to worship such abominations”. (Lives of the Saints)

The emperor marveled at her boldness, but above all at her unearthly beauty. It seemed to him that she was not born of mortal parents, but a goddess from among the gods he worshipped.

Saint Catherine was brought before a gathering of fifty philosophers, tasked with making her worship the gods, a burning desire of the emperor, overwhelmed by the beauty of the young Catherine.

But during the disputes they had with Saint Catherine, these scholars recognized without a doubt the Truth that she supported.

For the Confessed Truth, the fifty philosophers finally endured martyrdom, together with many others who were brought to the Christian faith by the wisdom of the enlightened mind of Saint Catherine.

Saint Catherine received the crown of martyrdom by cutting off her head, after she was tied up to be crushed by the sharp beasts of four wheels attached to the same axle, which, however, shattered into pieces, mortally wounding those who witnessed the terrible sight. That is why the Holy Martyr Catherine is represented in icons holding a wheel.

The empress cried seeing how Saint Catherine was tortured and confessing Christ the Savior she was also martyred.

In the same period as the martyrdom of Saint Catherine, several soldiers of the emperor were tortured and killed for Christ, together with their commander, named Porphyry.

The relics of the Holy Martyr Catherine were found at the end of the 8th century in a monastery on Mount Sinai built by Saint Elena, the mother of the Holy Emperor Constantine the Great, writes Agerpres, citing “Lives of the Saints”.
