Sines-A2 connection: businesspeople say that lack of access to the highway hinders the region’s competitiveness

Sines is today one of the main entry and exit points for goods in the country, but it still does not have a direct connection to the highway. Mayors and companies say that the lack of this access is hindering the region’s competitiveness and jeopardizing the safety of those who travel.

There are just over 14 kilometers that have been promised to be doubled for years. The first phase of the work, valued at 45 and a half million euros, began to advance in July last year. But for those who depend on it, the wait is costing them time and security.

Every day, dozens of truck drivers use this road to access the Port of Sines and its industrial complex. They mainly transport fuel, solid bulk, containers and, soon, also batteries.

The deadline set by the Government for completing the work is 540 days, around a year and a half. But there are those who question whether the road will even be ready in 2026.

The connection to the A2 also involves a second intervention on the section between Roncão and Grândola Norte and is included in the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). The project should be launched by December this year and will cost around 80 million euros.
