The version of the American proposal to end the war in Ukraine, with which Russia has become familiar, could in principle form the basis of the final peace settlement, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday in a telephone conversation with the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Citing the Kremlin’s statement, CNN reported about it, writes TASR.
The presidents of Russia and Turkey discussed the US peace plan in a phone call, with the head of the Kremlin noting that the version reviewed by Russia “is consistent with the discussions at the Russian-American summit in Alaska” that took place in August this year. “Russia’s interest in a political and diplomatic solution to the Ukrainian crisis has been confirmed,” the Kremlin said.
US peace plan
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday that Russia has not yet received a revised version of the US peace plan for Ukraine or any information about the talks between the United States and Ukraine that took place in Geneva, Switzerland, on Sunday.
CNN notes that the Kremlin is apparently referring to the 28-point American peace proposal that the US presented to Ukraine last Thursday. Among other things, this plan envisages territorial concessions by Ukraine or the limitation of the Ukrainian army to 600,000 soldiers. There should also be no NATO troops on Ukrainian territory.
Turkish support for diplomacy
The office of the Turkish president said after the phone call that Erdogan reiterated that Turkey is ready, as in the past, to contribute to all diplomatic initiatives and plans that will facilitate direct contact between Russia and Ukraine and contribute to lasting peace in the region.
The American station reminds that this year Turkey hosted three rounds of talks between the Ukrainian delegation. However, these negotiations did not bring any breakthrough in the war in Ukraine, which began with the invasion of Russian troops in February 2022, and the parties agreed only on a large-scale exchange of prisoners of war.
