Washington and kyiv assured this Saturday – in a joint statement – that, as a result of the talks held by both parties in Geneva, the two countries “developed an updated and improved peace framework”after reaffirming that “any future agreement must fully respect the sovereignty of Ukraine.”
The text published by the White House affirms that the conversations around the peace plan proposed by Washington to seal peace between Ukraine y Russia were “constructive, focused and respectful”, as well as “productive”, since “showed significant progress in the harmonization of positions and identifying clear next steps.”
The dialogue in Geneva reaffirmed “that any future agreement must fully respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and achieve a just and sustainable peace“say both parties.
“As a result of the talks, the parties developed an updated and refined peace framework“adds the statement, which says that the “Ukrainian delegation reaffirmed its gratitude for the firm commitment of the United States and, personally, of the president Donald J. Trump for their tireless efforts to end the war and the loss of life.
The text insists that, as representatives of both countries already said, the final approval of the new roadmap for peace in Ukraine It will depend on the presidents of both nationswho will continue to “work intensively on joint proposals in the coming days”, in addition to staying “in close contact with their European partners as the process progresses”.
The Ukrainian president, Volodímir Zelenskivalued the Geneva meetings positively and assured, in more cautious language than that of the joint statement, that have managed to introduce changes in the peace plan in line with the Ukrainian position.
Many experts have criticized the plan originally presented by Washington, to which Trump has also linked an ultimatum that expires on Thursday, considering that it is very favorable to Russian demands when it comes to requiring kyiv to reduce its Army, cede territory to Moscow and commit to never request membership in NATO.
For his part, the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio assured at the end of the talks in Geneva that there are still pending points to review the plan with Ukraine, but that “none is insurmountable“and that he trusts that an agreement will be reached.
