Democratic Senator Mark Warner calls President Donald Trump’s 28-point plan for a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine “a historically bad deal.”
The US Senator Mark Warner stated this Sunday that the Trump administration’s 28-point peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine “would, frankly, go down in history as an agreement historically bad“.
According to the Democratic senator from Virginia, Donald Trump’s plan “rivals the Chamberlain’s concession to Hitlerone year before the start of the Second World War”.
In 1938, the then British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain negotiated with Adolf Hitler the so-called “Munich Agreement”, which allowed Germany to annex parts of Czechoslovakia, and presented it as the “peace for our time“.
Historians consider the agreement to be a turning point in relations between Germany and the United Kingdom, which paved the way for the invasion of Poland by Adolf Hitler the following year, recalls .
Warner, the highest-ranking Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, told Fox News Sunday that he fears the plan, if accepted by Ukraine, could encourage Chinese leader Xi Jinping to move towards an invasion of Taiwan, classifying the proposal as “a total capitulation of Ukraine”.
“It is clear that this plan was, at least initially, presented only with and without any Ukrainian input“, said Warner. “Now they say there was a Ukrainian contribution. Now the president is changing his mind again about whether or not this is a final proposal. At the end of the day, we all want to see peace, but we don’t want a peace that rewards Vladimir Putin“.
The proposal provides that Ukraine cede the Donbass region to Russiain addition to accepting limits on the size of its Armed Forcesaccording to the plan obtained by Politico.
Warner says he is not sure whether the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy“I could not even survive politically within their own governmento” with such an agreement.
Donald Trump’s plan has attracted criticism of some of the most prominent “Hard-line” Republicans on Russiaincluding Senators Lindsey Graham, Mitch McConnell and Roger Wicker, who are pressuring the Trump administration to rethink the proposal.
“Who thinks pressure the victim and appease the aggressor will bring peace is deceiving himself”, McConnell on the social network X, this Sunday afternoon.
Still, the Trump administration counts on the support from many voices within the party, including Senator Eric Schmittwho called for restraint from critics in an interview on Fox News Sunday, also this Sunday.
Schmitt stated that key points of the planincluding security guarantees and territorial concessions, remain open.
“I think President Trump views this as a realist,” Schmitt said. “We have to see the world as it is, not as we would like it to benot as we wish it were, but as it really is. And the truth — and many people don’t want to say it — is that the Ukrainians have been losing for a long time“.
Zelenskyy reiterated this Sunday afternoon that “the core of the entire diplomatic situation is that It was Russia, and Russia alone, that started this warand it is Russia, and only Russia, that has refused to put an end to it since the beginning of the large-scale invasion.”
