A growing number of international airlines have canceled flights to Venezuela after the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) warned pilots to exercise caution when flying over the country’s airspace due to worsening security and increased military activity.
According to the president of the Venezuelan Airlines Association, Marisela de Loaiza, six airlines have suspended flights indefinitely: Gol, LATAM, TAP, Avianca, Iberia and Caribbean. Turkish Airlines suspended flights from November 24th to 28th.
On Friday, the FAA warned pilots that unspecified threats “could pose a potential risk to aircraft at all altitudes,” as well as to planes taking off and landing in the country and even to aircraft on the ground. The warning comes at a time when the government of US President Donald Trump is intensifying pressure on Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
