Dirceu: PT needs to update itself, but remain socialist – 11/24/2025 – Panel

The former minister says he needs to update his political program to include the technological and geopolitical changes of the last decade, but without losing the socialist essence.

Last Monday (17), he was appointed coordinator of a working group that serves as a kind of political compass for the party for the coming years.

The latest version is from 2016, before themes such as the power of big tech, the uberization of the world of work and the rise of the extreme right in the world emerged.

“We have to position the party for the coming decades and decide how to deal with the new power of China, the Brics, the new way the US operates in the context of the Trump administration, the new ways of working, among other points”, says Dirceu.

The former minister is expected to present his proposal at the party congress, scheduled for April next year. He was chosen for the position by the executive secretary of the congress, federal deputy Jilmar Tatto (SP), as he is a historic figure within the PT.

It is not designed to contain specific proposals for Lula’s government program in a possible fourth term, which will be the subject of another working group in congress.

Among the points to be debated by the group coordinated by the former minister is the ideological identity of the PT — whether it will continue to be a socialist party or will move closer to social democracy.

For Dirceu, there should be no change in the socialist character. “This is a subject that always comes up for debate in the PT. I personally don’t see any reason for it to be changed,” he says.

He intends to promote seminars and face-to-face and online meetings to discuss the points of the new document. “It will be a document debated from the bottom up,” he says.
