“The right of the Axis of Resistance and the Lebanese Hezbollah to avenge the blood of the brave fighters of Islam is unquestionable,” the Iranian Revolutionary Guards said. According to the French press agency, they provide financial and military support to the Lebanese militant movement. In their statement, the Revolutionary Guards referred to the Axis of Resistance, a group of militant organizations in the region supported by Iran, which are directed against Israel.
Tabatabaí lost his life on Sunday when Israeli forces attacked Beirut. At the time of the attack, he was in one of the apartment buildings. Hezbollah called Tabatabai a “great commander”.
The Israeli military said that Tabatabaí was a central operative of Hezbollah, in which he had been active since the 1980s, and held several leading positions there, including commander of the elite Radwán unit, but he also led Hezbollah’s operations in Syria. He was the second most important representative of the movement after the leader Naím Kasim. After the end of the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in November 2024, he was officially appointed as the Chief of General Staff of Hezbollah, and in this role he was responsible for its reconstruction.
Israel has recently intensified its attacks on Lebanon, despite a ceasefire in November 2024. AFP notes that the US has increased its pressure on the Lebanese government to disarm Hezbollah, which is greatly weakened after the war with Israel.
Hundreds of people attended the funerals Monday for Tabatabaí and his two companions, whose coffins were draped in yellow Hezbollah flags. Chants against Israel and the United States could be heard from the crowd as supporters of the movement carried portraits of militant leader Qasim and Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
