Italy’s opposition gets a draw in a mood test ahead of parliamentary elections

On Sunday and Monday, the regions of Veneto, Campania and Puglia elected a new regional parliament and government. Veneto clearly went to the right-wing coalition of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, while the opposition under the leader of the Social Democrats, Elly Schlein, won clearly in the southern regions of Campania and Apulia. In the weeks and months before this year, elections had already taken place in Calabria, the Marche and Tuscany; the first two went to the right-wing coalition, the left-wing stronghold of Tuscany remained red. The election series, which is generally seen in Italy as the last big test before the parliamentary elections in autumn 2027, ended in a 3-3 draw.
