Ministry of the Environment calls for veto on the extension of coal-fired thermal plants

The Ministry of the Environment recommended a presidential veto to the Civil House for the extension of contracts for coal-fired thermal plants until 2040.

This excerpt was included in the text of , a provisional measure on the electricity sector, which was approved by the National Congress and has until 11:59 pm this Monday (24) to be sanctioned or vetoed.

The section includes coal plants with contracts in force on December 31, 2022 and scheduled to end no later than December 31, 2028.

“The provisions included during the processing in the National Congress are unrelated to the matter, contradict the democratic principle and due legislative process, contradict the public interest, go against the international climate commitments assumed by Brazil and violate the fundamental right to an ecologically balanced environment provided for in article 225 of the Federal Constitution”, stated the ministry, in a statement sent to the Civil House.
