Rains leave more than 100 homeless in SC

An extratropical cyclone is expected to form on the coast of Paraná and Southeast Brazil

Intense rains have hit the southern region of the country since the weekend. In , at least 32 municipalities were affected, and, according to Civil Defense, 361 houses were affected, 113 people were homeless. In , in Erechim, more than 150 people were injured. In Guarapuava, Paraná, hailstones caused damage. Luiz Alves, which is located in the Itajaí Valley, had several areas of flooding and was one of the most affected cities. Classes were suspended during the afternoon and evening.

A health center was also opened to serve residents. There were 181.6 millimeters of rain between Sunday and this Monday (24), according to data from Civil Defense. Four other cities declared a state of emergency, namely Ibirama, Petrolândia and Lontras, in the Itajaí Valley, and Massaranduba, in the North. This region should be the most affected, as an extratropical cyclone is forming on the coast of Paraná and Southeast Brazil.
