The federal deputy (-RJ) stated today that he will continue with parliamentary work after fleeing to the United States.
A parliamentarian cannot be arrested as a result of a preventive precautionary measure, he said in a video published on
Outside of Brazil, Ramagem states that he is in a “regular” situation and will continue his parliamentary work remotely. “I’m regular. Yes, I can continue my parliamentary work even from a distance, as many from different parties also do. I am supported by the Constitution, the laws and the rules of the Chamber.”
The Chamber of Deputies was approached by UOL to comment on the video. The space remains open for demonstrations.
The Constitution expressly states that Congress sessions take place in person in Brasília. According to the Magna Carta, any parliamentarian who misses one third of the ordinary sessions loses his mandate. The exception is in the case of licenses or missions authorized by the Chamber, which is not the case with Eduardo.
The Chamber of Deputies reported last week that it did not authorize the parliamentarian’s mission abroad. According to the House, he presented medical certificates from September 9th to October 8th and from October 13th to December 12th. The president of the Chamber, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), has not yet commented on the matter.
“There is no remote mandate”, Motta said, when asked about deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP) — also in the United States.
“There is no regulatory provision for the exercise of the mandate remotely, and Congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro, when he made the decision to go to the United States to fulfill the role that he considers correct, knew that the parliamentary exercise was incompatible”, declared the president of the Chamber, in an interview with GloboNews in August.
Ramagem fled to the USA in September. A report published by the website PlatôBR showed the deputy in a luxury condominium in Miami with his wife.
Ramagem spoke about the escape for the first time on Saturday (22). “Today I am safe here, with the consent and knowledge of the American government,” he said in an interview with Conversa Timeline, a program led by blogger Allan dos Santos, also a fugitive from Brazilian justice since 2021.
“It’s logical that I wasn’t going to stay in Brazil, with my daughters seeing me being arrested without having committed any crime and suffering under a dictatorship,” he declared.
The congressman said he was “embraced” by the Trump administration. He also stated that (PL)’s was the “conclusion of all this scoundrel” and “consummation of all political persecution”.
On Sunday (23), the deputy’s wife, Rebeca Ramagem, posted a video on social media about her husband’s escape to the United States. In the video, the deputy appears receiving the family at an airport.
Rebeca said she arrived in the United States a week ago. “I landed with my daughters in the USA with a single purpose: to protect my family,” he wrote.
He left the country clandestinely. According to UOL columnist Carla Araújo, the PF investigation indicates that the deputy would have left Brazil for Boa Vista, capital of Roraima, and headed to the United States, probably via Venezuela or Guyana.
