Senators criticize tension between government and Congress – 11/24/2025 – Power

The vice-president of , Eduardo Gomes (PL-TO), stated that the tension between the government and Congress is “very bad” on the eve of important end-of-year votes, such as the Budget, and the beginning of the election year.

“The worst way is to close the dialogue with the House, because those who set the agenda are the leaders through the leadership of the president [ (-AP)]”, said Gomes on Monday night (24) in Rome, Italy.

He and other congressmen participated in a dinner organized by the Lide group, chaired by former governor João Dória.

“If things got tense in the pre-election period, it’s very bad. There is little time available for many fundamental matters”, stated the vice-president of the Senate.

He denied that other bombshells are in the plans for the coming weeks, such as the bill that regulates the retirements of health agents, announced by Alcolumbre on Thursday (20).

Gomes believes that the vote on Jorge Messias’s name for the STF (Supreme Federal Court), a point of contention between Alcolumbre and the president, should take place later this year. “He [Messias] He has a relationship with several senators. There is a questioning scenario, but in the last indications everyone had it.”

Still on the direction of the Senate in the coming weeks, he commented on the arrest of former president Jair Bolsonaro, his party colleague. “In the opposition group it is clear that we are all shaken,” he said. Gomes also denied that there was a risk of flight on the part of the former president.

Another who is in Rome is senator Efraim Filho (União Brasil-PB), who considers that the government is isolating itself “due to its attitudes”, when commenting on the relationship with Congress. “The center of Brazilian politics is closer to a construction with Governor Tarcísio de Freitas than with the re-election of President Lula”, he said, citing, in addition to the party itself, the PP.

“We have now seen in the reaction of the President of the Chamber [Hugo Motta, Republicanos] with the PT leader [Lindbergh Farias]”, he stated.

Parliamentarians made public tensions in the relationship between the two on Monday. Motta that he had “no interest in having any type of relationship” with Lindbergh. Hours later, the PT leader stated that he was the president of the Chamber.

“The government may be heading towards an election year turnaround with a loss of communication channel with the center, which could lead to a loss of support for the elections,” said Efraim.

For deputy Ricardo Barros (PP-PR), “regrettably”, the government encourages polarization that harms governability. “He pushes the debate towards topics that are not the ones that matter when it comes to getting on with life. And then things get more difficult. So Alcolumbre broke up with Randolfe [Rodrigues (PT-AP)]. Then Hugo Motta broke with the PT leader. This can’t be good. This is not how we are going to run our country.”
