Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah are escalating. The Israeli airstrike brought a tragic victim

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards are demanding revenge for Hezbollah leader Haysam Tabatabai, killed in an Israeli attack on Beirut, considered a key figure in the anti-Israeli resistance.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards on Monday demanded revenge for the killing of the chief of the general staff of the pro-Iranian Shiite movement Hezbollah, Haisham Ali Tabatabai, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike on the southern outskirts of the Lebanese capital Beirut on Sunday. Hundreds of people attended his funeral on Monday. TASR informs about it according to the report of the AFP agency.

  • Iran’s Revolutionary Guards demand revenge for the killing of the commander.
  • Haysam Tabatabaí was killed in an Israeli air attack in Beirut.
  • Tabatabaí’s funeral was attended by hundreds of people and anti-Semitic protests.
  • Hezbollah identified Tabatabaí as a major operative in the movement.
  • The United States is putting pressure on Hezbollah to disarm in Lebanon.

“The right of the Axis of Resistance and Lebanese Hezbollah to avenge the blood of the brave fighters of Islam is unquestionable,” Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said. According to the French press agency, they provide financial and military support to the Lebanese militant movement. In their statement, the Revolutionary Guards referred to the Axis of Resistance, a group of militant organizations in the region supported by Iran, which are directed against Israel.

Hezbollah and its commanders

Tabatabaí lost his life on Sunday when Israeli forces attacked Beirut. At the time of the attack, he was in one of the apartment buildings. Hezbollah called Tabatabai a “great commander”.

The Israeli military said Tabatabaí was a central operative in Hezbollah, where he had served since the 1980s and held several senior positions there, including commander of the elite Radwan unit, but also led Hezbollah’s operations in Syria. He was the second most important representative of the movement after the leader Naím Kasim. After the end of the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in November 2024, he was officially appointed as the Chief of General Staff of Hezbollah, and in this role he was responsible for its reconstruction.

The tension is rising

Israel has recently been intensifying its attacks on Lebanon, despite the November 2024 ceasefire. AFP notes that the US has increased its pressure on the Lebanese government to disarm Hezbollah, which is greatly weakened after the war with Israel.

Hundreds of people attended the funerals Monday for Tabatabaí and his two companions, whose coffins were draped in yellow Hezbollah flags. Chants against Israel and the United States could be heard from the crowd as supporters of the movement carried portraits of militant leader Qasim and Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
