However, there are many interesting names for both boys and girls. It is worth paying attention to the unusual and rare ones, thanks to which the child can stand out.
An interesting, though very rare, choice is Jonah. What’s worth knowing about it and why do some people think it brings bad luck?
Jonah it of Hebrew origin and means “dove”. They were worn by a biblical prophet described in the Book of Jonah, which is one of the prophetic books of the Old Testament.
In this book, Jonah is sent by God to Nineveh, which is threatened with destruction if the inhabitants do not repent of the evil they have committed. However, Jonah gives up this task and runs away. He boards the ship, but a storm is coming. Jonah admits it’s because of him and tells the sailors to throw him out so the sea will calm down.
This actually happens, and Jonah is swallowed by a large fish, in whose belly he stays for three days, praying. By God’s command, the fish spits Jonah onto the shore, and Jonah completes his task. The people of Nineveh listen to the man and repent, and God spares the city.
Many people associate the name Jonah with bad luck. All because colloquially “Jonah” was used to refer to people who, although they are able to get out of various troubles, also bring bad luck to others.
That’s probably why we rarely meet people with this name. It was given as the first name to only thirteen boys in the first half of 2025. Jonah celebrates his name day on September 21 and November 12.
