Ursula von der Leyen welcomes ‘solid and encouraging progress’ in peace plan talks

Ursula von der Leyen assured that the EU will continue to support Ukraine, while she identified the financing of Ukraine as a key issue, especially the use of frozen Russian state assets.

On Tuesday, the President of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, welcomed the “solid and encouraging progress” observed in the last few days in the negotiations towards a just and lasting peace for Ukraine, reports TASR.

  • Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the progress in the negotiations on Ukraine.
  • The EU supports Ukraine, considers its interests to be its own.
  • Financing Ukraine could also include frozen Russian assets.
  • The security of Ukraine is inseparable from the security of Europe.

Von der Leyen: The key issue is the financing of Ukraine

In her post on the social network, X assured that “Ukraine’s interests are also our interests” and that Ukraine can continue to count on support from the EU in the upcoming negotiations.

According to von der Leyen, “the key issue is the financing of Ukraine, especially the use of frozen Russian state assets.”

Von der Leyen welcomed US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s participation in Tuesday’s video conference of the Coalition of the Willing and noted the need for strong transatlantic cooperation, which she believes is bringing results. As an example, she cited the impact of coordinated and successive waves of sanctions against the Russian economy, limiting the resources Russia has available to wage war against Ukraine.

Russia escalated its attacks on Kiev on Tuesday night

The head of the EC expressed the opinion that pressure remains the only language that Russia understands, and added that the allies will increase this pressure until Russia shows a real willingness to embark on a credible path to peace.

She recalled that while Europe and its partners are fully engaged in efforts to establish a just and sustainable peace, Russia escalated its attacks on Kyiv on Tuesday night, with missiles and drones even violating the airspace of Moldova and Romania. The head of the EC described these incidents as another reminder that the security of Ukraine is the security of Europe.
