Argentine football paid tribute this Tuesday (25) to star Diego Armando Maradona, who died five years ago, amid demands for justice from the star’s family, who hold his medical team responsible for his death.
Maradona passed away at the age of 60, on November 25, 2020, while recovering from neurosurgery at his home in Buenos Aires.
Eight members of the former player’s medical team are accused of intentional homicide, when they were aware that their actions could lead to the patient’s death.
“Only those who are forgotten die and you, Diego, will be remembered by us every day”, published on the social network X the Argentine team, with which Maradona was world champion in 1986.
Conmebol also shared an image of the idol on X with the caption “the people don’t forget who made them happy”.
Dozens of clubs and players paid tribute to Maradona with messages and videos on this fifth anniversary of his death.
Boca Juniors, the club of which the star was a fan and where he retired in 1997, published a video showing fans leaving flowers at his statue at La Bombonera stadium, in Buenos Aires.
“People pass by, days, months and years pass. Everything passes, except you, who is always here,” said the club.
Argentinos Juniors, the club that revealed Maradona, and Napoli, the Italian club he led to glory in the late 1980s, also paid tribute in posts on social media.
Two of Maradona’s daughters, Dalma and Giannina, called for “justice” for their father’s death, which is being investigated in Argentine courts.
The first trial was annulled in May, due to the participation of one of the judges in a clandestine documentary about the process. The new trial will begin in March next year.
“Father, you will get the justice you deserve, I promise,” wrote Dalma Maradona on her networks.
The idol’s children announced in 2024 the construction of a mausoleum in the center of Buenos Aires where his remains will be transferred.
The space will be open to the public, but the work is suspended until the end of the trial.
