President Luiz Inácio da Silva commented, this Wednesday (26), on the arrest of the former president and members of the military leadership. During an event at Palácio do Planalto to sanction the new rules, Lula classified the episode as a milestone for the Democratic Rule of Law.
In a speech, the president emphasized the role of institutions in maintaining constitutional order. Referring to the developments that occurred this Tuesday (25), Lula stated that “yesterday the country taught the world a lesson in democracy: Brazilian justice demonstrated its strength”.
The president also cited the criminal liability of figures from the high political and military hierarchy, investigated for organizing a coup d’état. “For the first time there is a former president and four generals arrested for attempted coups”, declared the head of the Executive. He classified the process as an “excellent trial of the gang that tried to carry out the coup”.
Equality before the law
Still in his statement, Lula reinforced the concept that the law must be applied without distinction, regardless of the position or rank that those being investigated hold or have held.
For the president, the outcome of the investigations sends a clear message to society and the international community about the solidity of Brazilian institutions. “Democracy applies to everyone”, he concluded.
