When the sidewalks are covered with a thin layer of ice, even the best shoes can fail. That’s why it’s worth knowing tricks that will increase your safety and reduce the risk of falling in just a few moments.
In winter, slippery sidewalks are a daily occurrence, especially after night frosts. If your shoes don’t have anti-slip soles, here’s a trick that experienced hikers have been using for years. It’s about waterproof dressing plasters. Just stick them on the bottom of your shoe, positioning them perpendicular to the direction of walking. Such a homemade “overlay” improves grip and minimizes the risk of slipping. This is a quick, cheap and effective solution, perfect when snow or ice surprises you just before leaving for work.

Firstly gently roughen the surface of the sole with sandpaper or a fileand then spray it with a thin layer of varnish. After drying, a rough layer will be created that will adhere better to the surface. This is a temporary solution, but perfect when you need to leave the house immediately and there is ice under your feet. The varnish works similarly to specialized traction adhesives, but it is cheaper and easily available. Just remember to let it dry well before putting your shoes on.
