With the arrival of the heating season, orchids, especially the very popular Phalaenopsis species, find themselves in a difficult situation. While in summer the biggest problem is possible overheating and lack of moisture, in winter it is quite different. How to adjust care for them?
In order to effectively help orchids in winter and provide them with the best possible environment not only for growth, but also for flowering, we must first at least understand their requirements and “habits”. The major change we need to make is topping. In November, when the days get shorter and the actual temperature changes according to the heating, it is necessary to limit the water supply to the plants. Excessive humidity of the substrate in the colder period with a lack of light is the main cause of rotting of the roots. Therefore, water only when the roots are silvery gray in the translucent pot, not green.

Water them properly
As soon as we see that it is the right time for watering, we can offer it to the orchids either in the classic way, or even better – by immersing the pot in lukewarm water for ten minutes. The substrate absorbs enough water for the next few days, then let it drain for at least half an hour, for example and only then can you return the plant to its place.
Humidity is important for orchids
Another intervention that orchids are waiting for is related to a dry environment in a heated apartment. Plants that come from the tropics need relatively high humidity. Instead of constant dewing of the leaves, which can lead to fungal diseases, it is much better to place a container with water or moist expanded clay near the flowerpot. You will see how these exotic beauties warm up.
Light yes, but only the right kind
We have already mentioned the lack of light, which is not only lacking for us, people, but also for plants during the winter. Therefore, it is necessary to place with the orchid in the lightest place possible, but not in direct sunlight. Although the sun in winter is not as strong as in summer, in combination with window glass it can create an unwanted effect and burn the leaves.
Maintain the correct temperature
As well as from direct sun, we must also protect the plant from the cold. He hates neither draft nor direct contact with the cold glass in the window. They can even be harmed by a short blast of cold air during rapid ventilation. Therefore, do not forget to place the flower pot far enough away from the window before each ventilation, ideally in a place where cold air cannot reach. The ideal (stable) temperature for these original inhabitants of tropical forests is between 18 °C and 24 °C. Ensuring constant temperature and optimal humidity significantly reduces the risk of falling flowers and buds.
They hardly need fertilizing in winter
In order to give them the best possible conditions, we must not forget the fact that winter is definitely not the time when they need intensive fertilization. Therefore, deliberately reduce the doses and especially the frequency of such interventions. Additional doses of nutrition can even be completely omitted if the orchids bloom and do not produce new buds.
More complex, but important care
Winter care for orchids is a bit more complicated, but let’s remember that compliance with the given rules is important. The reward will be long and beautiful flowering, healthy roots and beautiful green healthy leaves throughout the winter and next year.
