Motta and Alcolumbre must not be sanctioned by IR – 11/26/2025 – Brasília Hoje

The presidents of the Chamber, (-PB), and of , (União-AP), decided not to participate in one of the current mandate of (PT), in a message of the dissatisfaction of the Congress leadership with the Palácio do Planalto. They will miss the ceremony in which the increase in the IR exemption range () will be sanctioned, this Wednesday (26).

The increase in IR exemption was Lula’s campaign promise in 2022 and the government held on to sanctioning it — considered one of Planalto’s main bets to boost the PT member’s popularity before the 2026 elections.

This is a popular agenda that politicians tend to want to join. The relationship between the President of the Republic and the heads of the Legislature, however, is shaken.

Motta angered the government by choosing the opposition (PP-SP) as rapporteur of the anti-faction bill. The dispute over the issue removed the president of the Chamber from the government. The most recent outcome of this friction was the breakdown of relations between him and the leader of the Chamber, (RJ).

In the case of Alcolumbre, what marked his removal was his appointment to a vacancy at the (Supreme Federal Court). The president of the Senate, and several sectors of the House, wanted the chosen one to be (-MG).

According to reports, the invitations were sent by the SRI (Secretariat for Institutional Relations), headed by minister Gleisi Hoffmann. It was expected that the two heads of the Legislature would give speeches during the ceremony.

When the matter was approved in the Senate, Lula recorded a video alongside Alcolumbre, stating that he was counting on the head of Congress to participate in the event.
