One of the continents is being torn in two: Scientists have discovered that a whole new ocean is forming!

From the analysis of the Earth’s magnetic sphere, it follows that Africa is tearing into two parts and a new ocean is slowly forming between them. However, according to everything, this continent began to split tens of millions of years ago.

Scientists from Keele University in Newcastle found this out by analyzing magnetic data that shows the beginnings of the geological separation of Africa and Arabia. The two areas were once connected, but a slow process gradually separated them. The rift is now spreading across Africa from northeast to south, accompanied by volcanic and seismic activity.

When the process is completed in five to ten million years, two continents will emerge, the larger western one with most of the African states and the smaller eastern onecomprising present-day Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique and much of Ethiopia. “These findings provide a unique insight into how our planet is constantly changing and shifting right under our feet,” said geologist Peter Styles.

A key role is played by the East African Rift, approximately 6,400 kilometers long and 48 to 64 kilometers wide. According to scientists, the future division will take place along its line and will also affect large lakes, such as Malawi and Turkana. Geochemist Emma Watts said that rifting occurs at a rate of 5 to 16 millimeters per year. “The process will take several million years to complete,” added.
