Parliament confirms freezing of tuition fees against the Government's wishes

Higher education fees will remain frozen at 697 euros in the next academic year. The Government talks about an artificial freeze and criticizes the opposition.

The PS’s proposal to maintain the freeze on higher education fees in 2026/2027 was confirmed by the opposition in plenary this Wednesday.

It received favorable votes from all benches, with the exception of PSD, CDS and IL.

The PSD/CDS proposal to index the value of tuition fees to inflation was sinkerdespite the appeals of the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs in the debate that preceded the vote. They voted against Chega, PS, Livre, PCP, BE, PAN and JPP. PSD, CDS and Liberal Initiative voted in favor.

The Government intended to unfreeze the value of tuition fees from next year, with an increase for 710 euros of the maximum value for degrees.
