The woman and the man, whose age was around 20 years old, were helped on the spot by the witnesses present. The shark attack occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning local time at Crowdy Bay beach, 280 kilometers north of Sydney. According to local officials, this is a remote location.
The woman died at the scene, while the man “suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle in a critical condition”, a police statement said.
The beach was closed after the incident and experts are currently trying to find out what kind of shark it was, police sources added.
Encounters with sharks

There are many sharks living off the coast of Australia, while the white shark is at the top of the list of species that could fatally injure a person, AFP writes.
