A Georgian man was given a life sentence for attempted murder after he doused his wife with gasoline and set her on fire in a tram. The court awarded him compensation in the amount of 75,000 euros.
A 47-year-old Georgian man who poured combustible material on his wife and set her on fire in a tram in the East German city of Gera in March received a life sentence from the court on Thursday for attempted murder. TASR informs about it according to the report of the DPA agency.
The district court found the man guilty of attempted murder and arson and ordered him to pay the woman 75,000 euros in compensation. The Georgian can appeal against the verdict.
The motive of the act
The president of the court, Uwe Tonndorf, said that the man tried to kill his wife because she wanted to end their marriage and he did not want her to lead an independent life. He compared the life-threatening injuries inflicted to a “public execution”.
According to the judge, the Georgian felt that his pride and honor had suffered. He described the man “not as a monster, but as someone who has taken heavy guilt upon himself.” “You destroyed your family and your own life at the same time,” Tonndorf said.
Tragic consequences
According to the court, the man caused unimaginable pain to the woman with his crime, which will leave a psychological mark on her for the rest of her life. According to the judge, he took the woman under his roof when she was 15 years old, and for the next 30 years she had to lead a life subordinate to her husband.
The Georgian had problems with alcohol and was unemployed. He beat and raped his wife in January after he began to suspect her of infidelity with a colleague. She subsequently left him with her daughter and decided to divorce him.
Tram attack
The man first threatened to kill his wife, and on March 16, he boarded the tram she used to travel regularly, doused it with combustibles and set it on fire. He fled the scene and tried to commit suicide.
