Federal deputy Aécio Neves (PSDB-MG) assumed this Thursday, 27th, the national presidency of the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB). The parliamentarian’s arrival at the helm of the party could pave the way for eventual support for the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), if he decides to run for President of the Republic in 2026.
During the ceremony, he stated that, if Tarcísio wishes to run, he will not be able to do so just as “Bolsonaro’s candidate”.
“If Tarcísio is just Bolsonaro’s candidate, we will not support him,” said Aécio, indicating that there is no final decision on alliances.

The event was attended by several parliamentarians aligned with former president Jair Bolsonaro, such as the vice-president of the Chamber, Altineu Côrtes (PL-RJ), and the Bolsonaro leader Sóstenes Cavalcante (PL-RJ), who spoke at the venue.
Aécio stated that he learned to “oppose by watching the PSDB act against the PT members” and highlighted his admiration for former president Fernando Henrique Cardoso and the political tradition of the party.
The deputy also said he had been “wronged in recent years” during Operation Lava Jato and declared that he has the goal of electing 30 federal deputies and “replacing the PSDB on the political board” in the next elections.
“We remain firm in our aim to combat the excesses of the PT administration and we will stand against the extremes, the polarization that has taken over our country”, stated the toucan.
Present at the event, the president of the Chamber, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), declared that “the strengthening of the PSDB is the strengthening of healthy debate in Congress”.
This week, Motta announced the rupture of his relationship with the PT. The disagreement gained strength when the deputy declared to the Folha de S.Paulo: “I am no longer interested in having any type of relationship with Congressman Lindbergh Farias.” The decision was confirmed by Motta’s allies at the Estadão/BroadcastGrupo Estado’s real-time news system.
