In the midst of negotiations to reach an end to the war after almost four years of armed conflict, the US Senator (Republican) Lindsey Graham has launched a clear warning about the need for peace to be fair for Ukraine.
Graham has stressed that a potential peace agreement that ends up putting Russian interests above Ukrainian ones “would torment us all”, since the only thing it would do is encourage more in the future.
As reported by the Ukrainian media the US senator has stressed that there can be no authentic peace while the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, believe that you are in control of the negotiations.
In this situation, Lindsey Graham has pointed out that The Russian president will only try to seek the surrender of Ukrainesomething that, if achieved, could prompt it to launch new wars against other countries in the medium term.
For this reason, the Republican senator has highlighted that rather than reaching an unfair peace agreement for Ukraine, Both the US and Europe have the capacity to take new measures to try to weaken Russia.
“The US and the rest of the world have many cards they have not yet played against Putin’s Russia. I hope that soon we can reach an honorable and just peace,” Graham said.
Washington and Moscow had initially agreed on a 28-point peace plan. However, the Geneva summit has allowed the European Union enters the negotiations and that drives several changesamong them the point referring to the territorial renunciations by Ukraine.
That section has now been worded as follows: “Ukraine undertakes not to recover its occupied sovereign territory by military means […] Negotiations on territorial exchanges will begin from the line of contact.”
Nevertheless, Russia has already announced that it agreed bilaterally with the USso the agreement between Russia and Ukraine seems to be moving away.
