The federal government will hold this Thursday (27) the auction of 19 airports located in the Legal Amazon and the Northeast, as part of the Program Enlarge. The initiative aims to attract investment from the private sector to modernize regional airport terminals. According to analyst Débora Oliveira, in Live CNNthe initiative is part of the government’s strategy.
The main objective is to transfer responsibility to the private sector, which will be able to carry out the necessary improvements in infrastructure and modernization of airports.
Benefits and Previous Experience
Previous cases of privatization demonstrate positive results, such as , which presented significant improvements to its infrastructure, including runway renovations and transformation into a connecting hub for airlines.
“The expectation is that private investments can increase the competitiveness of the regions served, and, potentially, reducing the price of air tickets”, explains Débora. The airports included in the auction are located in strategic points for regional connectivity.
Challenges and Perspectives
Among the main challenges is the need to modernize the runways to accommodate local demand. “In addition, close monitoring will be necessary to ensure that possible increases in airport charges do not negatively impact users”, concludes the analyst.
In the medium and long term, it is expected that improvements to the terminals can generate indirect economic benefits for the government, through an increase in tax collection and an increase in tourism in the regions served.
