Argentina launches Rafael Grossi as candidate for UN Secretary General for 2027-2031

The Argentine government has formalized the candidacy of Ambassador Rafael Mariano Grossi for the position of Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) for the period 2027-2031. Current director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Grossi is described as a diplomat with more than four decades of service and recognized leadership, having been re-elected for a second term at the body in 2023.

In the text, Buenos Aires argues that Grossi has qualifications that make him a competitive name to succeed the current secretary general, António Guterres.

According to the statement, his performance at the IAEA was marked by “open, efficient, present management and clear results”, in addition to a history of participation in global crises as an “impartial and effective interlocutor”.

The announcement also emphasizes Grossi’s “deep knowledge of the multilateral system”, described as “an excellent candidate” to lead the United Nations in the next term.
