The French leader Emmanuel Macron has announced what had been speculation for months: the establishment of a voluntary military in France. As the Frenchman has been able to argue, the measure comes in response to the “increasing threats“, as well as the “desire for commitment” of young people.
The announcement was made precisely at the Army base in Varces, near Grenoble, during a visit to the 27th Mountain Infantry Brigade. The measure, according to General Pierre Schill, chief of staff of the Army, seeks “acquire the necessary mass” for the armed forces in the possible outbreak of a conflict. “Fear does not prevent danger. The only way to avoid it is to prepare for it,” Macron noted.
Voluntary military service, which will be for those over 18 years of age, will begin “this coming summer” and will offer a payment of 900 to 1,000 euros per month (less than France’s minimum interprofessional wage, which has generated criticism). Volunteers will be able to register for 10 months and “will only serve on French territory.” The Government hopes to recruit at least 10,000 young people by 2030, 50,000 by 2035.
France is not the only country that chooses this route.with a payment of 2,600 euros per month and a subsidy to obtain a driving license. Belgium is also considering following this path. The measure also seems to please the French themselves, since 86% expressed their desire to return, according to a survey carried out by Ipsos-CESI School of Engineers and published in March by The Parisian.
