Jordan criticizes Russia for illegal recruitment. The citizens of the country found themselves in the fighting in Ukraine

Jordan condemned the recruitment of citizens into the Russian army. It declared it a violation of the law and called on Russia to stop this practice, which threatens their lives.

Jordan on Thursday called on Russia to stop recruiting its citizens into its armed forces after two of them were killed fighting alongside Moscow, which has been waging an offensive in Ukraine since 2022. TASR informs about it according to the report of the AFP agency.

In a statement, the Foreign Ministry in Amman called the recruitment a “violation of Jordanian law and international law” that “puts citizens in serious danger.”

Risk of death and legal consequences

A ministry spokesman urged Jordanians “to report any attempts to recruit them into the Russian military” and warned of the risk of death as well as legal risks. It is illegal for Jordanians to join the armed forces of a foreign country.

The spokesman added that the department “has asked the Russian authorities to stop recruiting Jordanians and to terminate the service of all Jordanian citizens who have already been drafted into the army.” He added that the ministry is also aware of recruitment via the Internet.

Russian plans to acquire fighters

It is not known how many Jordanian citizens may have been recruited into the Russian army, but according to unofficial data, hundreds of Jordanians are currently living in Russia and more than 20,000 have studied in countries of the former Soviet Union.

At the start of Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine, when Moscow was backing former President Bashar al-Assad’s government in Syria, Russian President Vladimir Putin said he wanted to recruit 16,000 fighters from the Middle East – while around 2,000 Syrian army troops were later reportedly sent to Russia, according to a French agency.
