Messias nomination and hearing interval follows average – 11/27/2025 – Panel

Despite the Lula government’s complaint about the scheduling of the hearing, appointed for the , the deadline established by the president of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP), does not deviate from the standard of the majority of vacancies open in the court.

Messias was nominated by Lula on November 20th and will be heard on December 10th, 20 days later.

The interval is the same as other members of the STF, such as Cristiano Zanin, in 2023, and Gilmar Mendes, in 2002.

There were faster hearings, such as those of Nunes Marques (19 days, in 2020), Flavio Dino (17 days, in 2023), Alexandre de Moraes (16 days, in 2017), Dias Toffoli (14 days, in 2009). Carmen Lucia (14 days, in 2006) and Luiz Fux – the fastest, with just 9 days apart since being nominated, in 2011.

Of the current composition of the STF, only two hearings took longer than Messias’s: those of Edson Fachin, with 29 days in 2015, and that of due to a boycott by Alcolumbre, who chaired the Constitution and Justice Commission at the time.

The Lula government is trying to delay Messias’ hearing at the CCJ, despite Alcolumbre’s campaign to defeat him.
