St. Andrew’s Day 2025. Where does the tradition of fortune telling come from?
On the night of November 29-30, i.e. from Saturday to Sunday this year, we will have one of the most magical nights of the year – . This is when, thanks to fortune telling, we can predict our future and even check what our husband’s name will be. Although they are now treated as a form of fun, they have a centuries-old tradition and used to be a very important holiday. They have most likely been celebrated in Poland for almost 500 years. The first mention of them appeared in 1557. St. Andrew’s Day is the beginning of Advent, i.e. the time of waiting for the birth of Jesus. In the past, St. Andrew’s Day fortune-telling was taken extremely seriously and was intended only for unmarried girls. They concerned, of course, the future husband – what he would look like, where he came from and what his name was. It was believed that what the prophecy showed would really come true, which is why it was most often performed in isolation. It is true that the origin is not fully known, although some claim that they come from ancient Greece.
These St. Andrew’s Day predictions will get any party going this Saturday
If you are preparing for a party with friends this Saturday and are wondering what games and fortune telling to organize, use our tips. You will definitely have a great time. We’ve put together a few below.
Pouring wax
Thanks to this fortune telling, you will know your future. Pour the liquid wax through an old key directly into cold water. This is how various wax figures are created. The figure we get heralds our future. For example, if yours resembles an angel, you will receive good news, but if you see a ring, you can count on a soon engagement.
Ink blot
Pour a few drops of ink on a piece of paper and wait. After a while, check which letter the resulting shape most closely resembles. This is the first letter of your future husband’s name.
Leaf, wedding ring, ribbon, rosary
We put these things in caps and draw lots. A leaf will mean spinsterhood, a wedding ring or a ribbon from a cap – an imminent wedding, a rosary – monastic status.
Flipping a coin
Everyone has to think about their wish, and then you choose a coin of any denomination. From the designated place you must get to the container with water. The wish will come true only to the person who gets it.
Fortune telling with shoes
All people present at the party place their shoes one by one towards the exit from the room. The shoe that reaches the door first wins and its owner’s dream will come true.
Floating dreams
Everyone must write their dream on a piece of paper and then throw it into a bowl of water. Only the dream that comes to the surface first will come true.
Fortune cookies
You can buy them at a confectionery shop or bake them yourself. Fortune telling should be placed in the cookies. Each person who opens the cookie will find out what awaits them in the near future.
