Strike in Italian courts postpones Carla Zambelli extradition hearing

The hearing for the extradition process of federal deputy Carla Zambelli to Brazil was canceled this Thursday (27) due to a strike by justice employees in Italy. The information was confirmed by the defense lawyer, Fabio Pagnozzi.

On social media, Pagnozzi stated that a new hearing should be scheduled next week, but the end of the strike is uncertain. “Meanwhile, my client remains unjustly imprisoned in Italy,” said the lawyer.

This Thursday’s hearing would mark the beginning of the process that will judge the deputy’s extradition.

Zambelli was sentenced by the Federal Supreme Court to 10 years in prison for hacking into the systems of the National Justice Council. The deputy left Brazil in June, shortly after the conviction. Before going to Italy, she took refuge in the United States, but chose the European country because she has Italian citizenship.

At the time, Zambelli declared that she would be safe in Italy, but cooperation agreements between the two countries allowed her to be detained preventively in Rome in July, due to the risk of escaping again.

In Brazil, in addition to the outstanding arrest warrant, the deputy is also responding to a request to lose her parliamentary mandate, which is awaiting analysis by the Chamber’s Constitution and Justice Committee.
