The way you set up the Christmas tree, if it is a real pine, can determine whether it lasts the entire month or loses its shine a few days later. According to American television presenter Martha Stewart’s blog, three horticulture and forestry experts warn that placing it near sources of heat or direct light can compromise its health and increase the risk of a house fire.
The tradition of placing the Christmas tree near the fireplace, a heating vent or next to a sunny window is common, but the technical recommendation goes in another direction.
Heat, light and risk of dryness
According to the same source, when the tree remains exposed to constant heat, water loss intensifies, which accelerates the drying of branches and needles. It is said in the publication that, as the trunk dries, the water absorption capacity decreases, leading to the leaves detaching and leaving the surrounding space dirtier. Heat can also increase the risk of combustion, as dry wood is more susceptible to catching fire.
The same source states that the choice of location is crucial to the safety and durability of the tree. Cool areas, away from fireplaces, radiators and windows with direct sunlight, are considered more suitable options. Keeping the tree against a wall and controlling the temperature in the room between 15 and 18 degrees can help maintain freshness throughout the festive weeks.
How to ensure the tree stays healthy
There are simple procedures that increase the resistance and longevity of a natural Christmas tree. Before placing it on the support with water, it is recommended to cut about two and a half centimeters from the base, which improves absorption. The publication writes that the water level must be monitored daily, as a tree measuring around 2.4 meters can consume up to four liters per day.
According to Martha Stewart, chemicals should not be added to the reservoir, as they can interfere with the natural hydration processes. Adding the same source as spraying the tree with water helps maintain its green tone and fresh appearance throughout the season.
Positioning is a decisive step
Positioning it in restricted passage areas or areas that block circulation is not recommended, both for safety and functionality reasons.
By maintaining these precautions, it is possible to enjoy a natural tree throughout the festive period without accelerated dryness or intense needle loss. Positioning continues to be the first decisive step and experts emphasize that aesthetics should not override the necessary conditions for the specimen to remain hydrated and stable indoors.
