Abel Ferreira will remain at Palmeiras. This Thursday (27), in Lima (PER), where the team is preparing to compete on Saturday (29) in the final of the Copa Libertadores da América with Flamengo, the Portuguese commander confirmed that he will renew with the club, even though he has not actually signed the document. The information was confirmed by UOL.
“The president wanted me to stay, I have no problem saying that I will continue at Palmeiras, period. I don’t need a signed paper. She knows who I am, I know who she is. For the five years of relations we have, I don’t need a contract to say that I will continue or not continue at Palmeiras”, Abel told GE.
The new bond had already been in the hands of Abel Ferreira for a few weeks. All that was left was the coach’s recommendation to finalize the agreement.
Despite the commander’s confirmation, Palmeiras still does not take the agreement for granted. You will wait for the document to be signed.
If Abel remains, in fact, Verdão also does not expect any other solution from the technical committee.
UOL found that João Martins and company should also remain. The assistant himself has already stated that everyone walks together.
There is no termination fine in the contract, valid until December 2027. President of Palmeiras, Leila Pereira had already confirmed that there was a verbal agreement with Abel for the renewal.
“At no point did I disavow our coach. Regardless of the result of the game, my wish is that Abel, his coaching staff and our football director remain until 2027. For me, Abel is the greatest coach in the history of Palmeiras, with all due respect to the others who played for Palmeiras. I know his ability, I know his work”, said Leila, before concluding:
“I’m a woman who sees what’s in front of me. The best way for you to improve your work is to recognize some flaws. That’s what I meant, in the last five Brazilian games Palmeiras didn’t do well, we’re going to work to overcome this difficulty. But now it’s another championship. I haven’t disqualified anyone, it’s the president’s opinion. I’m not going to outsource the responsibility to anyone, it’s my responsibility”, she analyzed.
The president of Palmeiras also commented on the possibility of Abel leaving the club on his own if he is runner-up in the Libertadores and Brasileirão. Leila seemed calm.
“I can’t speak for Abel. I don’t make decisions based on game results, fans’ opinions or the press. I’m sure the best thing for Palmeiras is to continue with our coaching staff. But, if the coach tells me he doesn’t want to continue, I can’t tie Abel down. I even wanted to (laughs). I know Abel, the professional, the job.”
“In football we are prepared to win and have results that we don’t want, that’s not why we’re going to change everything. I don’t care about pressure from the fans, I’m absolutely sure of that. If I see that the path isn’t right, I’ll sit down to talk and change the path with them. I’ll continue with these professionals until my last day in office”, he concluded, to ESPN.
