Carrot limp? You will quickly restore its firmness and taste

Store carrots are stored in cold stores before they hit the shelves. After bringing it home, it goes on the counter or in the fridge drawer. Under the influence of inappropriate temperature, it quickly loses water, which gives it elasticity. Low ambient humidity, high temperature or long storage time contribute to the root drying out. This results in wrinkled skin and almost rubber-like elasticity.

If the carrot has already wilted, it does not mean that it is useless. She simply lost a lot of water and this condition needs to be changed quickly. Place the limp carrots in a bowl of very cold water, preferably with ice. Then put the bowl in the fridge for a few hours. During this time, the root will gradually absorb water, which will restore its firmness and crispiness. After such treatment, the taste and consistency may be almost like that of a fresh vegetable.

Carrots absorb water because they have a slightly spongy structure. Remember, however, that you can only perform this procedure once and eat the vegetable as soon as possible. You can only restore the peeled root to its crispiness for some time. Carrots with black spots should not be bathed in water. This is a sign of a fungal disease and even cutting off the affected parts will not help. It is best to throw such a vegetable into a brown bio-waste container as soon as possible.

To avoid a situation in which carrots lose their firmness from the very beginning, ensure appropriate storage conditions. It’s best to keep it in the bottom vegetable drawer of the fridge, in an airy bag or wrapped in a slightly damp paper towel.. Also check the condition of the vegetable every day.

Humidity should be moderate, as too wet an environment may promote rotting. It is also worth avoiding storing carrots next to fruits that emit ethylene (e.g. apples), which accelerates the “ripening” and spoilage of vegetables.
