Elderly woman has been missing for 2 days after leaving Santa Maria da Feira Hospital

The elderly woman, aged 84, is from Oliveira de Azeméis and was admitted to the emergency room at Santa Maria da Feira Hospital that morning, with “memory lapses and disorientation”.

An 84-year-old woman has been missing since Wednesday, after being observed at Hospital São Sebastião, in Santa Maria da Feira, a police source revealed this Friday.

According to the Aveiro district command of the PSP, the elderly woman in question is from Oliveira de Azeméis and was admitted to the emergency room at the Entre Douro e Vouga Local Health Unit (ULS EDV) that morning, with “memory lapses and disorientation”.

“She was hospitalized and, when they called her to go to the observation office, she didn’t show up. At around 6:15 pm, a colleague from the PSP was informed [de serviço remunerado no hospital] that the lady had been absent without medical discharge and, after that, by viewing the video surveillance images, it was clear that at 1:15 pm she had left the building”, a command source told Lusa.

The management of Hospital da Feira confirms the elderly woman’s departure “autonomously, through the main door of the Emergency Department”, and adds: “All internal procedures foreseen for this type of situation were immediately activated, including checking the facilities, analyzing the video surveillance cameras and contacting the competent authorities”.

Authorities and family look for the elderly woman

The PSP, in turn, began by disseminating the user’s identification “throughout the entire Feira police station” and later extended this signaling “to the entire national structure” of the same police force.

“All possible searches were carried out in the vicinity of the hospital”, adds the PSP, which says it continues to make efforts to locate the elderly woman. “But there is no sign of her so far,” said the same source this morning, around 10:00.

In April 2024, Hospital da Feira recorded an identical situation, then with an 82-year-old man who, between diagnostic tests, left the emergency room on his own initiative and was never located again. At that time, a hospital source stated that the family had not given “any information that you were not autonomous or had any disability that prevented you from being alone”.

The PSP stated that he remains to be located.

As for the elderly woman on Wednesday, a source from São Sebastião states that “the hospital continues to collaborate closely with the authorities and remains focused on the safety of users and strict compliance with its internal procedures”.
