Enough “is affecting the physical and mental integrity” of Parliament workers

Union asks for protection in formal complaint. Chega deputies are “causing enormous discomfort to workers, causing them extreme anxiety”.

The Union of Workers in Public and Social Functions of the South and Autonomous Regions presented a formal complaint to the secretary general of the Assembly of the Republic against Chega deputies, accusing them of a pattern of behavior that “profoundly affects the dignity, self-esteem, mental health and physical integrity” of parliamentary employees.

The news advanced by details, based on the complaint, several recent episodes.

One of the cases concerns an intervention by Pedro Frazão, in mid-September, when the deputy insisted, in the middle of the plenary session, that the PSD parliamentary leader, Hugo Soares, had “offered him a beating”.

Although the complaint presented by Frazão was rejected, Chega accused the services of lack of reliability in the transcription of the debate and of omitting comments addressed to the party.

Another moment mentioned in the complaint occurred on October 27th, when André Ventura accused the Assembly services of “cutting his intervention time”.

According to the union, there is a recurring narrative from Chega deputies that employees do not respect the party’s representation and that, as they are “paid by Portuguese taxes”, they must correspond to its demands.

These statements, the workers maintain, “profoundly affect the dignity, self-esteem, mental health and physical integrity of the work”. Chega’s deputies are “cause enormous discomfort to workers, causing them extreme anxiety”but

For the union, the case goes beyond the political dispute between parties and touches on the institutional functioning of the Assembly of the Republic itself. Therefore, it calls for the application of measures “appropriate and conducive to its protection”.

“The suitability and good name of workers are at stake, raising doubts about their honesty, character and professionalism, and violation of the right to honor and seriousness or offensive to their good name, reputation and image is not acceptable”, points out the union.
