According to experts, some symptoms can help detect cancer at an early stage. The sooner a person reacts to symptoms, the faster they can seek appropriate treatment. Charitable organization Cancer Research UK draws attention to four persistent symptoms that people should not ignore, reports the portal
Cancer is one of the biggest causes of death in the UK, accounting for around a quarter of all deaths. The sooner you catch the following symptoms, the sooner you can seek the right treatment.
1. An ulcer in the mouth or on the tongue
A seemingly inconspicuous problem can hide a dangerous threat. “It’s common for mouth sores (small sores) to develop, especially when you’ve been sick. But they usually heal within about two weeks. An ulcer or a red or white spot that does not heal after three weeks should be reported to your doctor or dentist.” the mentioned organization states.
2. Persistent cough
A persistent cough is one of the most common symptoms of lung cancer. “If the cough does not go away within three weeks, changes, or continues to get worse, it is always best to consult your doctor,” charity representatives emphasize. The problem can also be accompanied by a hoarse voice.
Skin wounds should be monitored if they do not heal. “Skin regenerates very quickly and most cuts or wounds heal within a week or so. If a spot, wart or wound does not heal, even if it does not hurt, get it checked out by a doctor.” recommended by Cancer Research UK. It could be a symptom of skin cancer.
4. Persistent heartburn or indigestion
“Sometimes you may feel a slight discomfort or pain in the center of your chest during or after a meal. This is more likely after a large, fatty or spicy meal, or if you have been drinking alcohol.” explained experts who consider this condition to be a common phenomenon. “However, if you often experience heartburn (reflux) or indigestion, or if the pain is particularly severe, you should see your doctor.” added.
Cancer Research UK warns that most of these symptoms are caused by less serious health problems, but it is important to get checked. “Talk to your doctor if you notice any of these symptoms or any other unusual changes, even if they’re not on this list. Most of the time, these symptoms are caused by something less serious than cancer. Still, it’s important to get checked out.” the organization warned.
