Government of SP creates catalog of endangered animal species – 11/27/2025 – Panel

In December, the government will begin a process of updating the state’s Red List of Threatened Fauna, a document that guides public conservation policies, and whose most recent version is from 2018.

The review, in charge of will be coordinated by the Directorate of Biodiversity and Biotechnology (DBB), with operational management from the Department of Technological Innovation and support from the Agribusiness Research Development Foundation (Fundepag). The project will count on R$900,000 in resources from DBB.

The new assessment will bring together experts, scientific data and analysis tools on the conservation status of wildlife, considering factors such as deforestation, urbanization and climate change.

“Updating the Red List is one of our board’s most strategic tasks. It guides conservation decisions for the coming years and reflects the state’s commitment to evidence-based public policies. We are structuring a technical, transparent and robust process, which will support both the preservation of biodiversity and environmental planning in São Paulo”, says Patrícia Locosque Ramos, director of DBB.

The review will be based mainly on a survey on birds published by USP in partnership with the Environmental Research Institute and Unesp.

The survey cataloged 863 species, including 76 new species and subspecies since the previous version in 2011. The survey also identified 125 species threatened with extinction and 20 considered regionally extinct.

“Science has shown, very clearly, where the main risks to São Paulo’s fauna are. Our work now is to transform this knowledge into a structured technical assessment, with clear criteria and methodologies recognized nationally and internationally. It is a careful process, which will define the State’s priorities for the protection of species”, says Carolina Born, member of the team responsible for the update.

The process will involve successive stages of analysis, validation and consolidation of the species evaluated, the results of which will be published over the next few months.
