The president (PT) stated this Wednesday (26) that Brazil gave a “lesson in democracy to the world”, when commenting on the arrest of () and the other defendants in the coup plot by the (Supreme Federal Court).
The court made official this Tuesday (25) the case of the former president and the other seven defendants of the so-called crucial core of the coup plot.
In addition to the former president, who had already been in preventive detention since Saturday (22), three of his former ministers — Anderson Torres (Justice), Augusto Heleno (Institutional Security Office) and (Defense) — and former Navy commander Almir Garnier (former Navy commander).
“Yesterday this country took an important step. This country yesterday taught the world a lesson in democracy,” said Lula. “Without any fanfare, the Brazilian justice system showed its strength, was not frightened by threats from outside and carried out an excellent trial, where there is no opposition accusation, it is all accusations from within the gang that tried to carry out a coup”, he declared.
“For the first time in 500 years in this country, someone has been arrested for an attempted coup. A former president of the Republic and four four-star generals arrested. In a demonstration that democracy is valid for everyone, it is no one’s privilege. It is a right of 215 million Brazilians. I am happy, not because of anyone’s arrest, I am happy because this country is ripe to exercise democracy to its fullest”, he declared at the end of his speech.
The statements were made during the IR (Income Tax) exemption sanction ceremony for those earning up to R$5,000, one of the PT member’s main bets for the 2026 electoral campaign.
The measure also includes a tax discount for those who earn between R$5,000 and R$7,350 per month.

In total, the tax relief at the base of the income pyramid should benefit up to 16 million taxpayers, at a cost of R$31.2 billion next year, according to the rapporteur, deputy (-AL) — who was present at this Wednesday’s ceremony.
