Man left in critical condition after trying to save girlfriend from shark in Australia

A man who was at the scene helped stop the bleeding of the tourist who was trying to save his girlfriend who died in a shark attack. The authorities admitted that this “heroic intervention” saved time until help arrived.

The couple, both in their 20s, had arrived in the area the night before and camped near the beach. They decided to swim at dawn, a time when sharks are most active, and they were swimming with dolphins when the attack happened.

According to the the man suffered serious injuries to his thigh after trying to fend off the shark and drag his companion more than 50 meters out of the sea. The woman, however, ended up dying in the sand.

A “heroic” help

A person at the scene helped stop the man’s bleeding, following instructions given over the phone by the emergency services, help that may have saved his life, authorities admitted.

The person responsible for the New South Wales Ambulance Service, Josh Smyth, classified this help as “heroic”highlighting that it saved time on a remote and unsupervised beach.

The man was taken by helicopter to the hospital and remains in critical condition.

The first information indicates that the attack may have been caused by an adult bull shark. The beach has been closed and drones are monitoring the area to try to locate the animal.

Authorities are also analyzing images captured by the couple before the attack, which could help provide more information about what happened.
