The Attorney General of the Republic, Paulo Gonet, spoke out this Friday (28) in favor of granting house arrest to retired general Augusto Heleno, former minister of the Institutional Security Cabinet during the Bolsonaro government sentenced on Tuesday (25).
At 78 years old, the former minister was sentenced by the Federal Supreme Court to 21 years in prison for being part of the ‘crucial core’ of the coup plot. As he is a soldier, he has the prerogative to serve his sentence in an Army facility.
Upon being arrested, Heleno told a medical team that he suffers from . With the revelation, the general’s defense filed a request for a change in the detention regime.

Heleno stated that he discovered the disease when investigating episodes of memory loss. The diagnosis did not prevent the general from taking over as GSI minister in the government of former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022).
Gonet defended that house arrest be authorized on a humanitarian basis, considering his age group and health condition. “The circumstances indicate the need to reassess the situation of the person in custody”, highlights the PGR.
It will be up to the Supreme Court minister, Alexandre de Moraes, to accept the recommendation or not.
