The Hungarian Prime Minister flew to Moscow to meet Putin: What will be the subject of negotiations?

  • Vladimir Putin will receive Orbán in Moscow.
  • Orbán focuses on securing Russian energy supplies.
  • The Hungarian Prime Minister wants to renew the plan for the peace summit in Budapest.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed to the TASS news agency on Friday morning that Russian President Vladimir Later that day, Putin will receive Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in Moscowwrites TASR. “Yes, we can confirm it,” Peskov answered TASS’s question. The topics of the negotiations should be the supply of Russian energy raw materials to Hungary and the possibility of resolving the war in Ukraine.

In a video on the social network Facebook, Orbán previously stated that he is going to Moscow to negotiate mainly on the supply of energy raw materials. According to him, Hungarians pay the lowest prices in Europe for fuel because “they have access to cheap Russian oil and gas.”

“I am going there to ensure that energy supplies to Hungary are secured at an affordable price for the winter and next year,” announced the Prime Minister of Hungary. Reuters reminds that the administration of US President Donald Trump granted Hungary an exemption from sanctions on the import of Russian oil and gas during Orbán’s visit to the White House this month.

When asked whether he would also discuss the war in Ukraine with Putin, Orbán said that “it is difficult to avoid.” The Hungarian Prime Minister has stated in the past that he would like to revive the plan for a “peace summit” in Budapest. It was planned for the end of this year, but did not materialize.

Despite the war in Ukraine, the Hungarian prime minister maintains a close relationship with the Russian president, wrote the Reuters agency. Budapest continues to import a substantial part of its energy raw materials from Russia, despite European efforts to reduce its dependence on Moscow. According to Hungarian media, Orbán met Putin a total of 14 times. Since 2022, it has been three times, most recently in Moscow on July 5, 2024.
