The Council classified the revolt as “a serious attack against the democratic and constitutional order”.
The African Union (AU) “immediately” suspended Guinea-Bissau due to Wednesday’s military coup, which overthrew the outgoing president, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, until constitutional order is reestablished.
In a statement issued this morning after an extraordinary session of the Peace and Security Council, the AU confirmed the decision to “immediately suspend the Republic of Guinea-Bissau from participating in all activities of the Union, its bodies and institutions, until constitutional order is re-established in the country”.
The Council, in line with its “zero tolerance” policy towards “unconstitutional changes of government”, classified the revolt as “a serious attack against the democratic and constitutional order” and “the essential perspectives of stability” expressed by citizens in last Sunday’s general elections.
