Heleno, 78, was sentenced to 21 years in prison for the coup plot led by Bolsonaro after the defeat by the president (PT) in 2022. A retired general, he will serve the sentence.
Upon undergoing a general and integrity examination before being taken to military prison, Heleno told doctors that he “has Alzheimer’s dementia that has been evolving since 2018, with significant loss of recent memory, constipation and hypertension, undergoing drug treatment (polypharmacy)”.
Alzheimer’s disease was not brought to light by the military’s defense throughout the course of the coup plot process.
Heleno also told doctors that his only current complaint is back pain and that he has no history of recent injuries.
The doctor who signed the report states that Heleno “appears in good general condition, alert and with regular vital signs”. “On general examination, he is an elderly individual, with an appearance consistent with his biological age, collaborative and with a stable emotional state”, he says.
In its conclusion, it states that “the soldier examined appears to be in good general condition and shows no signs of apparent bodily injuries or harm to his physical integrity.”
“The examinee has reported comorbidities, under pharmacological control, according to the reported history”, says the doctor.
Heleno was sentenced to a custodial sentence under an initial closed regime and an 84-day fine.
The trial of the First Panel of the (Federal Supreme Court) convicted him, Bolsonaro and other defendants of armed criminal organization, abolition of the democratic rule of law, qualified damage to public property and deterioration of listed property.
The general was accused of being one of those responsible for constructing Bolsonaro’s narrative against the .
The complaint says that Heleno, together with the former director of the (Brazilian Intelligence Agency), prepared Bolsonaro’s speech and agreed to illegal espionage in favor of the former president. The general’s defense denied all accusations.
