History of Palmeiras

The history of Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras begins in 1914, when Italian immigrants founded the then Palestra Italia in the city of São Paulo. The club quickly established itself as one of the forces of football in São Paulo, building an identity marked by the active participation of the Italian community and its competitive style on the field.

The name change to Palmeiras, in 1942, during the Second World War, marked one of the most symbolic chapters in the Alviverde trajectory. Under strong political pressure, the club adopted the new name and, on its debut as Palmeiras, beat São Paulo in a historic game that entered the fans’ memories. The episode consolidated the idea of overcoming, a trait that has accompanied the club ever since.

In the following decades, Palmeiras consolidated itself as a national power. The 1960s and 1970s became known as the Academy era, when the club assembled technically brilliant teams, made up of players such as Ademir da Guia, Dudu and Leão. It was during this period that Palmeiras established itself as one of the main references for well-played football in the country, racking up state and national titles.

After years of ups and downs, the club returned to prominence in the 2010s, driven by administrative restructuring, financial stability and the partnership with Crefisa. The period marked one of the most successful phases in Alviverde history, with Brazilian titles and, above all, the second consecutive Libertadores championship in 2020 and 2021, under the command of Abel Ferreira. The recent success reinforced the club’s image as one of the most organized and competitive in South American football today.

Currently, Palmeiras is recognized as a continental power, with one of the most numerous fans in the country and with a growing international profile, including recent participation in the Libertadores finals and also in the 2025 Club World Cup.
