The Australian driver, who is fighting for the World Cup title, won the sprint race at the Qatar Grand Prix this Saturday (29), with his two rivals in contention for the title, and, finishing third and fourth, respectively. The Brazilian Sauber driver, , finished the race in 11th place.

With this result, Norris remains at the top of the championship, 22 points ahead of his McLaren teammate, Piatri, and 25 points more than the Red Bull Dutchman, with two races and 50 points still up for grabs.

The Australian, who had not reached the top step of the podium since the Dutch Grand Prix on August 31, started from pole position and maintained the lead during the 19 laps at the Lusail circuit, near Doha.

“So far, everything has gone well and without problems”, celebrated Piastri. “I’m happy so far and now I just need to keep the momentum going,” he added.

Piastri overtook Mercedes’ George Russell, who started from the front row, with Norris completing the podium.

Verstappen, who started further back, in sixth place, gained two positions, but was unable to overtake Norris, which would have made the title fight even more exciting.

Norris, who had no chance of becoming world champion in this sprint race, can still win his first title this Sunday (30), as long as he leaves Qatar with more than 25 points ahead of his two opponents.

This Saturday, the qualifying session will take place from 3pm (Brasilia time) to define the starting grid for Sunday’s Grand Prix.
