Protests force far-right congress to be postponed in Germany

The far-right German party AfD was due to meet to elect the new leader of the newly formed party youth, but the meeting had to be postponed due to protests.

More than 15 thousand protesters blocked access to the place where the convention was scheduled to be held to elect the new leadership of the youth party of the AfD, a far-right German party.

Despite the strong police apparatus, some people used smoke bombswhich led the police to intervene and respond with water cannons.

According to authorities, the protests were attended by participation of a trade union central and a left-wing partyo The Left.

The convention had been organized to elect the leader of the newly created youth party.

In the last national elections, the far right came in second placewith more than 20% of the votes, and has been rising in the polls.
